Facade

Final piece

Evaluation

My project is called “Diagnostic Investigation into Creative Practice”. I intended to investigate how paper clothing can reflect on cultural aspects such as traditions. Also, I was looking at the way of emphasizing human body by folding, multilayering, cutting, sewing the paper. My outcome is made of two rectangular paper that were folded. However, one of that rectangular paper was cut to create a certain pattern. Those two papers were tied together by rope on both sides. I also added some origami onto the skirt. I took inspirations from the artists/designers that I had researched. Tara Keens Douglas made paper dresses that are mostly only folded, so her dresses are flowy and elegant. Also, she created a carnival costume, which inspired me to investigate cultural stuff and finding a way of expressing culture through clothing. Jum Nakao made paper dresses that he destroys at the end of the fashion show. He uses laser cutter to created patterns on the dresses and create contrast between black and white (the models have black clothes under the dress). He inspired me cut the paper and create patters that relate to my idea. My artwork is about cultural traditions. Each country has their own tradition I have focused on India. In India when a bride is about to gets married, she covers her body with henna tattoos; it signifies pre-wedding. I looked at some henna designs and created mine own one. I made my outcome starting with cutting the paper size. Then, I cut out the pattern that I make to create a meaning. I only cut out half of the space that I have available. The rest of the space I used to fold the paper. I added transparent paper under the area that was cut. Then I cut out the same size of the paper and fold it. To my skirt I add few origami stuffs to add shapes to the skirt and create a juxtaposition as one side of the skirt was flat, while the other side was bumpy. Those origamis link with the pattern that was cut out. Also, I added a rope on the back and the side. The rope on the side was fixed in place, but the rope on the back was made to allow the person to adjust it to their needs. My design and my outcome differ from each other. My design has lot of grids and no origami. This change was made because the grids that I made was keep falling off as the paper was folded and the paper didn’t have stable surface. I add origami because the skirt looked too plain without them. I notice that there is weak connection to the content of my piece. I could improve this by adding origami that are more related to wedding and henna designs. My outcome does what I intended it to do. The strength of this piece is the folding way, rope that adjust the skirt to a person waist size and origami features.
