Sequential Storytelling

Process

I cut out five squares in the same size. Then I draw a plan on each square to plan where walls, windows and furniture are going to be.

First, I draw an outline plan where things could be placed (black pen). Then, I used pink and blue markers to draw the actual plan. The things drawn in marker are bigger and are filling the space as I wanted.

The seating area was going to be underground. Therefore, I measured the space and how much cardboard I would need to fill the gaps. I cut out every element and stuck it together using glue gun.

When I was planning my model I didn't think about how underground seating area will affect the whole contraction. I needed to make another layer to cover the thing that was sticking out and making the model unsteady.

After creating another layer the construction was steady, but it also was taller.

I made furniture and stuck it to the floor using glue gun.

I stuck the walls and painted the space on ground floor.

I painted the top floor.

I stuck the walls on top floor and painted them.

Lastly, I stuck the ground floor and top flor together. Also, I added loungers on the left side of ground floor. I fold transparent paper and stuck it next to the loungers to imitate transparent curtains.

Final Piece

Evaluation

My project is called “Escapism”. I intended to investigate the ways of escape from reality into dream or fantasy. I created a house from a dream that our imagination created. This house has two floors. On first floor there is a sitting area, cupboard, bathroom, stairs, sun loungers, a lake that comes from outside through a huge window and cover part of the floor. Through the window we can see sunset, ocean and palm. Also, on the left side instead of wall there are transparent curtains that were made of transparent paper that was folded. On the second floor there are rooms that should look strange and confusing. There is a big corridor and huge window where we can see stars. Each room has one pastel colour while walls in those rooms are in the same colour but darker to create a contrast between colours. The whole building is made of cardboard. I was trying to create this place comfortable and psychedelic-like. I didn’t paint the outside, because I wanted the main attention to be on the inside. My main inspiration was Charlotte Taylor who did playful illustrations of minimalistic structures. I create a minimalistic space like her illustration. I did experiments using her style and from those experiments I created an interior space. Also, I tried to highlight shadows in my work like she does in her illustrations. Gillian Carnegie inspired me to create minimalistic space that contain the sense of aesthetic. Fione Rae showed me how to use imagination in painting and create a certain mood using visual language. I was also inspired by movies such as “Alice in Wonderland” and “Paradise Hill”. “Alice in Wonderland” showed me a complex and confusing interior spaces that were in Red Queens’ castle. “Paradise Hill” showed me interior spaced that are minimalistic, comfortable, psychedelic and smart made furniture. I created a strange house that interior space might be confusing, while the outside of the building look simply. I designed my building this because I wanted to show the complexity of our dreams and imagination. When I was making my final piece, I didn’t create the outside of the house as I intended, because I wanted the main attention focused on interiors. I wanted the outside to be simple and the inside to be confusing, but if I would do the outside of the house the interiors could be hard to notice. I couldn’t put small furniture in rooms as it was hard to made very small furniture, so I leaved the rooms empty. The seating area that was in the floor to save space and make the space optically look bigger was made of cardboard. When I was making this area, this thing was poking out on the bottom and the house wasn’t stable, so I make another floor that I covered and making the budling taller. This model does what it intended. The strength of this piece are the different paintings in the windows, cutting stuff, atmosphere, the sitting area that is underground and the essence of the place. I could improve the essence of the rooms that are empty and fill it with furniture.
